What is a True Spring?
True Spring is Spring at full strength. Your undertone is warm and golden, and your coloring is clear and bright, with a fresh, light-to-medium look. Where Autumns need earthy, muted warmth, you need warmth with sparkle. Some systems call this palette Warm Spring.
The test is simple. Clear, warm colors make your skin look lit from within. Heavy darks and dusty grayed shades make it look dull.
Common True Spring traits
- Hair: golden blonde, strawberry blonde, copper or golden light-to-medium brown.
- Eyes: clear blue, bright green, warm aqua, golden hazel or light warm brown, often with noticeable sparkle.
- Skin: peachy, golden or ivory. It may freckle and tan golden.
- The black test: black near your face looks heavy and drains your color.
- The coral test: warm coral makes your skin glow.
The True Spring palette
- Neutrals: camel, warm beige, ivory, golden brown, light warm gray and warm navy.
- Accents: warm coral, clear aqua, warm yellow, apricot, fresh green, turquoise, poppy red and periwinkle.
- Lighter colors: peach, light aqua and buttercream. They're great at the face.
Colors a True Spring should avoid
- Heavy darks: black, charcoal and very dark brown. Use warm navy or golden brown when you want a dark.
- Cool grays and blue-grays. They make warm skin look sallow.
- Dusty, muted shades: mauve, mushroom and dusty rose read as dull on clear coloring.
- Icy, blue-based colors such as icy pink and burgundy.
True Spring clothes
- Swap black for warm neutrals. Camel, warm navy, ivory and golden brown cover coats, trousers and bags.
- Wear your accents near your face: coral, aqua and warm yellow knits, blouses and scarves.
- Choose crisp, fresh fabrics: cotton, linen, silk and light knits with a soft sheen.
- Pick cheerful, clear prints: florals, stripes and color-blocking in warm colors with clean edges.
- For denim, medium-to-light washes, plus ivory or warm white jeans.
True Spring makeup
- Lips: warm coral, peachy pink, coral-red and warm rose. Glossy or satin finishes suit your brightness.
- Cheeks: peach, apricot and warm coral.
- Eyes: golden brown, bronze, warm taupe and soft khaki. Brown or bronze liner. Turquoise or teal liner works for a pop.
- Brows: warm golden brown or light brown. Avoid ashy or very dark brow colors.
Jewelry, metals and hair color
Metals: polished yellow gold, rose gold and brass. Turquoise, coral, citrine, peridot and cream pearls suit the palette.
Hair color: golden blonde, strawberry, copper and warm honey brown. Ashy or very dark solid colors tend to dull a True Spring. As gray comes in, warm golden or soft strawberry blending often keeps your glow. A colorist can tell you what works for your hair.
True Spring vs. its neighbors
Soft Spring (our name for Spring's gentlest subpalette) has the same warm undertone with less contrast. Peach, soft coral and light aqua suit it better than bright coral. Dark Spring takes Spring's brightness deeper: warm red, bright teal and golden brown. True Autumn shares your warmth but is muted and earthy. If terracotta and moss look better than coral and aqua, you may be an Autumn.
True Spring after 40
Your clear, warm undertone stays for life. If your contrast softens as your hair lightens or silvers, you may find the gentler Soft Spring shades flatter you more near the face, with your brightest coral saved for a lip or a scarf. Read Does your color season change with age?
